A teenage boy stumbles upon a questionable behavior. When he reaches out to ask for help, he receives a variety of answers. “It’s normal for boys” a mentor said, and “it’s not that big of deal, just try not to do it” a pastor attempted to help. The boy grows up engaged in this questionable behavior, but there is always part of him that does not feel like it is right, even though he enjoys it. “You will grow out of it” or “it will resolve itself once you get married” is more advice received, but never satisfies the boy. Ten years into marriage his wife is told by a Christian therapist, “all guys do that, it’s normal.” This does nothing to help the hurting and confused wife who feels betrayed every time this behavior happens. The boy, now a married man, is aware how hurtful this behavior is to his wife, but cannot seem to stop doing it. He has kept it secret for so long, he has come to the conclusion he will have to take it to the grave with him even though it is eroding his soul and confidence.

That teenage boy from the opening paragraph is me and the thousands of other men who can relate. Addiction has no boundaries. It will claim anyone from any background, career, or stage of life. No man is immune from the temptation. Pastors and church staff members are not immune. CEO’s and VP’s are not immune. Well-educated men are not immune. All men are susceptible to porn.
